i have never been interested in design.
i assumed you had to be either a hipster, pretentious or artsy fartsy to join their club.
but one of the speakers was jonah sachs (this guy makes a lot of creative and innovative video).
and i really wanted to hear him speak.
my background with design has been limited to the occasional design talk on TED.
before stepping foot in the conference i had already decided that i was going to be listening to hipsters pretend that fancy looking vacuums shape our humanity.
i am wrong a lot.
but this time i couldn't have been more off.
compostmodern is a sustainable design conference held every year in san francisco.
the place was packed full of innovative go getters that wanted to revolutionize our consumption of the shit we buy.
about half the speakers were decent on stage.
but all of them had done innovative work that they were able to illustrate through their own case studies.
just as interesting as the speakers were the attendees.
i was drowning in optimistic realists and i fucking loved it.
growing up in berkeley and studying in santa cruz i'm very familiar with people letting everyone know that they plan to save the world.
95% of the time they end up taking a bong hit, buying a 'fuck bush' bumper sticker and calling it a day.
designers are the converse.
this is a community of people that make things we all use.
while most of us spent our college careers writing 5 page essays on baby barf, these people were busy learning how to design, create and implement.
i now have a crush on designers.
the men were all better dressed than me.
the women were born with average looks but so stylish and intelligent that they were incredibly hot.
i really enjoyed my time at compostmodern and hope to return next year.
i'm sorry i misjudged you designers.
